A Legacy of Faith and Excellence Since 1950
Saint Teresa School opened its doors in September 1950 with 240 students and five dedicated Sisters of Mercy as faculty members. Founded under the visionary leadership of Monsignor Matthew F. Clarke, the school was established to strengthen the parish’s role as a spiritual foundation in the community. Originally housed in a modest four-room section of the old Lincoln Avenue School, Saint Teresa quickly outgrew its space and relocated to its current home in 1953. A second floor was added in 1960 to accommodate continued growth, and the school proudly celebrated its first graduating class in June 1956.
For nearly 50 years, the Sisters of Mercy guided the school with faith-filled leadership, leaving a lasting impact on both its academic and spiritual life. Inspired by their commitment to excellence, the school’s curriculum has always reflected the Mercy tradition—educating students to be intelligent, compassionate, and faithful Catholic Christians ready to serve the world.
In 1998, Saint Teresa School welcomed its first lay principal, marking a new chapter while continuing to uphold the values and mission established by the Sisters. Their legacy remains at the heart of everything we do.
Today, under the spiritual leadership of Fr. Joshua Barrow, Pastor of Saint Teresa Church, and the academic leadership of Principal Susan Mansfield, Saint Teresa School thrives as a cornerstone of the parish and a vibrant part of the wider community. With the support of a committed school board, we continue to grow and evolve to meet the needs of today’s students and families.
Serving children from Pre-K through Grade Eight, our school community extends beyond Pawtucket to include students from East Providence, Seekonk, Providence, North Providence, Warwick, Cranston and beyond. While many of our families are parishioners of Saint Teresa or nearby parishes, we welcome all who seek a Christ-centered education rooted in love, service, and excellence.
